Number of men and women taught by Peter Farquhar, as I was, would ever overlook him. A potent individuality, who taught English for 34 several years at Manchester grammar school and Stowe school in Buckinghamshire, Peter, who has died aged 69, obtained strange respect and affection from his students. Dozens became near buddies for life.

Peter was born in Edinburgh, the son of a GP. He was educated at Latymer Upper school in London and Churchill Higher education, Cambridge, exactly where his English tutors provided George Steiner.

Chicken-like in physical appearance, and slight in stature, he was assumed to begin with by some pupils to be a pushover, but they only experimented with once. “He would be completely withering if you experimented with to be silly,” states a previous colleague. Peter’s dimensions was a lot more than compensated for by his intelligence and tenacity. He once punched a guy at a bus-stop, it is explained, for being rude to an old girl.

“Peter was fragile, official but pleasant, specific but not pedantic,” states another colleague. “He had an eye-catching heat, mixed with mental rigour.” For several learners he impressed a really like of literature and poetry he would place pupils’ likely and gently drive them to fulfil it. Despite his outdated fogey graphic, he had an acute comprehending of the issues of modern adolescent boys. For some, he became almost like a next father.

Peter resisted the progressive aspects in English teaching throughout the nineteen seventies, and experienced hoped to turn out to be a headmaster. He was once informed he was about to be appointed head of a south London school, but the governors then changed their minds.

In 2014, he was astonished to see Toby Stephens in the film Feel, actively playing Dr Farquar, a traditionalist grasp in a northern independent school. It was directed by a former Manchester grammar school pupil, David Scheinmann, who admitted the character was partly based on Peter.

An evangelical Christian, Peter when regarded as getting into the church, but his father mentioned he didn’t “have the patience”. For 20 a long time he belonged to the ministry team at Stowe parish church, where he frequently preached.

He is survived by a brother, Ian.
