WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Rescue teams attained a scenic glacier exactly where a helicopter carrying seven individuals crashed Saturday, but authorities say crevasses and rugged terrain are hampering their attempts.
The extent of any accidents or fatalities to the pilot and six travellers aboard remained unclear.
Authorities said the helicopter crashed at about 11 a.m. on Fox Glacier, a common vacationer spot on New Zealand’s South Island.
A rescue helicopter employed a winch to lower a paramedic and an alpine rescue crew onto the crash web site, stated Vince Cholewa, a spokesman for Maritime New Zealand. He mentioned the spot in which the helicopter crashed was filled with crevasses and treacherous terrain, which was complicating their efforts.
He said the staff on the scene had nevertheless to report again with an assessment of any injuries or fatalities. He mentioned there was reduced cloud in the region, but in any other case the rescuers had not described becoming hampered by the weather.
