WEST Point, N.Y., Nov. 26 (UPI) — United States Navy Academy leaders announced pillow fights have been banned in response to the bloody pillow melee that still left some thirty freshman cadets hurt at West Level in August.
The once-a-year pillow fight has prolonged been a tradition at the university as a way for “plebes,” or initial-12 months learners, to bond following extreme summer season training. But 3 months in the past, the tradition went awry soon after several set hard objects, including helmets, into pillowcases for the battle. At least 24 people have been left with concussions.. One individual was knocked unconscious.
Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen mentioned the incident showed that these kinds of “unprofessional spirit functions” have “no location in the potential of the academy or in the growth of the Army’s next era of leaders.”
Officers explained the pillow fight was not an officially sanctioned celebration, nor was it primarily based on any longstanding custom.
“Several accidents had been the result of cadets possessing been hit by elbows or other human body elements in the course of the scuffle of the pillow battle or from merely slipping or getting knocked to the floor,” the report said.
