Officer given serious misconduct notice over Ms Dhu death, inquest told

A law enforcement officer who was dependable for an Aboriginal lady who died in custody in WA’s Pilbara was provided the 2nd optimum misconduct recognize for her conduct, an inquest has been told.

Ms Dhu, 22, died in August previous 12 months soon after checking out the Hedland Wellness Campus three instances in less than forty eight hours.

She had septicaemia and pneumonia induced by an infection from a damaged rib.

Detective Inspector Eric Smith, from the Inside Affairs Device, said Senior Constable Shelly Burgess had unsuccessful to answer with “sufficient urgency” to Ms Dhu’s very clear deterioration although in the South Hedland police lock-up.

Constable Burgess and one more officer took Ms Dhu to medical center but she died much less than an hour later on.

Constable Burgess was offered an Assistant Commissioner’s warning and 3 of her colleagues gained warning notices.

The inquest continues.
