Crab bridge helps Christmas Island critters beat the traffic

Xmas Island rangers have taken street basic safety to a entire new amount with the development of a “crab bridge” over the island’s busiest highway.

In planning for the once-a-year spawning season, rangers have been placing up limitations along the roadside to avoid the crabs from becoming crushed below the wheels of cars.

A five-metre-large bridge has also been constructed at a single position alongside the highway to aid the crabs shift across the island and carry on their migration.

Xmas Island Tourism Affiliation advertising and marketing supervisor Linda Cash stated apart from the functional use, the bridge experienced also grow to be a vacationer attraction.

“Sydney can have its Harbour Bridge, and San Francisco its Golden Gate bridge, but it’s our crab bridge which is at the moment wooing travelers from all in excess of the world,” Ms Income explained.

Rangers on Xmas Island have also constructed 31 underpasses throughout the island to aid the migrating crab masses en route to spawn.
