4 Queensland prisons have banned imported milk after a criticism from Katter’s Australian Get together (KAP) MP Shane Knuth.

Mr Knuth said he was horrified to uncover that given that August, the Queensland Corrections office has been getting imported UHT milk from New Zealand for prisoners in Lotus Glen, Townsville, Wolston and Brisbane correctional centres.

The Dalrymple MP explained it had taken away business from the state’s battling dairy farmers.

“You just can not make selection like this to say ‘OK we’ll save a handful of cents but we will give a kick in the guts to the industry that surrounds it’,” he said.

He took the problem to new Corrections Minister Bill Byrne earlier this week.

A spokesman for Mr Byrne mentioned the minister quickly banned the use of prolonged-life milk in favour of the local item.

Orders for new milk have previously been manufactured.
